ECMO, which saved lives during Covid-19 pandemic, back in action to battle adenovirus in West Bengal
Mangalore, 23 Dec, 2024 – KMC Hospital Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Circle Mangalore, in association with Dr. Madhan'S ECMO Health Care Pvt. Ltd., is pleased to announce the launch of its ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) services. This marks a ground-breaking milestone in critical care for the region, as it will be the first ECMO facility in coastal Karnataka and Northern Kerala. The service will provide advanced life-support technology for critically ill patients with severe heart and lung failure, offering them a vital lifeline when traditional treatments are no longer sufficient.
The ECMO machine functions as a life-saving support system, continuously pumping blood out of the body, oxygenating it, and removing carbon dioxide, before returning it to the body. This procedure is vital for patients suffering from severe heart and lung failure, providing a bridge to recovery while physicians work to treat the underlying condition.
Dr. Dattaraya Prabhu, Head of Critical Care at KMC Hospital Dr. B.R. The introduction of ECMO services will significantly enhance the hospital's ability to treat patients with severe respiratory and cardiac failure, such as those suffering from pneumonia, severe COVID-19, cardiac arrest, or severe trauma. The service, which will be available from the end of this month, is expected to become an essential resource for the region.

Dr.Madhan also pointed out that the challenges faced by ECMO patients often include awareness, timely initiation of treatment, high costs, and complications such as bleeding. “We aim to address these challenges by providing our expertise directly to hospitals and managing ECMO care on-site, which can be crucial for improving outcomes,” he added.
